Bytown, named in in honour of Colonel John By, served at the time as a safe passage for trade between Ontario and Quebec. In 1857, a few cities competed for the title of capital. Queen Victoria chose Ottawa, largely because it was located between Montreal and Toronto and along the border between Ontario and Quebec (the centre of Canada at the time).
The name " Ottawa " is derived from the Algonquian wordadawe, which means to begin, and was known at the time as Bytown
